If you’re a cashier, surgeon, or tour guide, standing all day is unavoidable. Your legs may become stronger than others, but the downsides can include poor posture, as well as feet, ankle, knee, and hip pain. Many who stand all day can end up with joint problems or chronic pain issues due to an overuse injury/condition, such as plantar fasciitis.
Choose shoes with the following traits for standing all day:
Thick cushioning for the inner sole, as well as on the outer sole. You can add orthotic inserts with good arch and heel support if you have specific shoe requirements as part of your uniform.
Shoes that fit well. If they are too small or too large, it can cause chafing, blisters, corns, calluses, etc. Your feet should be stable and snug inside your shoes without feeling too much tightness. Your toes should have a room to wiggle, but not slide around.
Breathable material. Unless your shoes require a specific type of material to protect your feet, try to find material with is breathable and can dry/air out easily. If not, try to have 2 pairs for a long day of work – and 2 pairs of socks so that you can change them out. This will prevent infections and odor.
Home care after standing all day:
Before and after a long day of standing, stretch your feet.
If standing all day leaves you with swollen feet or ankles, it can help to elevate your feet while resting.
Warm foot soaks can help relieve tightness and pain.
Give your feet a massage. The tension, especially if you have plantar fasciitis, can be painful. A foot rub with some lotion can help relieve pain and dryness. You can also massage using a golf ball, lacrosse ball, or other item between your foot and the ground, rolling it around to massage the bottom of the feet.
